Too often, depression comes with weight gain. Not only can your mood tempt you to seek comfort in food, some psych meds can cause you to gain a few or more pounds.


That’s why I was happy to read this study about using cumin powder to lose weight. Cumin is safe and cheap, and it looks like it’s effective, too.

In the study, 88 women all adopted a lower calorie diet. They all received nutrition counseling for weight loss. But only half of them added a teaspoon a day of cumin powder to their diet.

At the end of three months, the cumin women had lost significantly more weight than the non-cumin women: 13 poundscompared to 10. Even better, while the control group cut their body fat by about 5 percent, the cumin group cut it by 15 percent. That’s a lot of fat loss! Their waist circumferences shrunk more, too, and cholesterol and triglycerides improved.

I couldn’t pass up this trick, so I’ve started taking a teaspoonful every day. While the women in the study mixed it into their yogurt, I’ve just been placing a teaspoonful near the tip of my tongue and gulping it down with a glass of water. It’s not too bad! I’ve been doing it for just a few weeks, so it’s too early to tell about weight loss, but  I’m optimistic.

Remember, taking cumin powder is no substitute for nutritionand exercise, but it’s an easy addition that’s worth a try!
